The Jersey Sub-Aqua Club was formed in 1953 by a group of enthusiastic people who had been fired with the desire to explore the underwater world as a result of pioneers like Jacques Cousteau and Hans Haas who had been instrumental in bringing underwater scenes to the television. The introduction of viable breathing equipment that could be purchased readily by anyone wishing to dive brought the sport within the reach of everyone.

Before the advent of the clubhouse, members used to meet in the Weighbridge car park and many arrived on bikes with their cylinders strapped to their backs. The club then managed to acquire the old forge at La Follie in 1954 and that has been the home of the club ever since.

In the early days, the club was a spearfishing club with a “Lunging” section. Although the club is now totally scuba, in its day the spear fishing team was known nationally and internationally and won many events. At its peak, many of the team members regularly free dived to 30 metres in search of fish and there is still some evidence with photographs and quite ancient spear guns on display, of this period in the history of the club.
